Filter your drinking water
Our work in Hawaiʻi was inspired by EPA researcher Seth Newton, whose team developed and piloted methods for testing drinking water for contaminants broadly, beyond those monitored by regulation. They tested nine homes in North Carolina — some on municipal water, others on private well water. In all homes, they found contaminants used in pesticides and industrial processes. Big Island Drink Smart (BIDS)
Rural Hawaiʻi Island (aka “Big Island”) is one of the few places in the US where rainwater catchment is commonly used for drinking water. The BIDS project team tested samples from 20 home rainwater catchment systems for a variety of contaminants. Click the button below to see the results.
